Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, or Pura Bratan, is a major Shaivite water temple on Bali, Indonesia. The temple complex is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul. Water temples serve the entire region in the outflow area; downstream there are many smaller water temples that are specific to each irrigation association (subak). Built in 1633, this temple is used for offerings ceremony to the Balinese water, lake and river goddess Dewi Danu, due to the importance of Lake Bratan as a main source of irrigation in central Bali. The 11-storey pelinggih meru in the complex is dedicated to Shiva and his consort Parvathi. Buddha’s statue is also enshrined in this temple. Lake Bratan is known as the Lake of Holy Mountain due to the fertility of this area. Located 1200 m above sea level, it has a cold tropical climate.

Menjangan Island is a small island, located 5 miles to the north-west of Bali island and is part of the Indonesian archipelago. “Menjangan” in Indonesian means “Deer”. The name was given by the local population observing wild deer herds swimming to the island every spring and covering a distance of approx 1.2 miles. Even though the island is a significant part of Bali Barat National Park, it is assigned to the Javanese administrative district and falls under its jurisdiction. The closest big cities are: Singaraja, located in the north of Bali and Banyuwangi, located on the eastern coast of Java. The closest settlement is Sumberkima village. The nearest airport is Letkol Wisnu regional (approx. 8 miles from the island).
Ulun Danu Batur Temple is an important Balinese Hindu temple in Kintamani, central Bali. It’s also called ‘Pura Batur’ or ‘Batur Temple’ for short. The temple is the second most significant mountain temple after the Besakih Temple complex. Ulun Danu Batur sits at the southwestern rim of the vast caldera of Mount Batur. It features around nine majestic temples within its complex. There’s also over 200 different shrines and pavilions inside. The temple complex’s final site was established in 1926. This was after relocating from its original site at the foot of the volcano. Batur’s eruptions in 1917 and 1921 saw lava flows damaging the former site. Ulun Danu Batur is not to be confused with the similarly named Ulun Danu Beratan (the famous lake temple in Bedugul).

Besakih Temple is often referred to as Bali’s ‘mother temple’ – a grand complex of at least 86 clan temples and shrines on the south-western slopes of Mount Agung. At least 70 celebrations take place at Besakih every year, as each shrine has its own anniversary. Besakih is considered to be the biggest and holiest of Bali’s temples. Its high location offers spectacular countryside views with rice paddies, hills, mountains, and streams. Exploring the whole site can take a day. Pura Besakih is the only temple open to every devotee from any caste group. Pura Besakih has 3 main temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity. Pura Penataran Agung (in the centre) has white banners for Shiva, the destroyer; Pura Kiduling Kreteg (to the right) features red banners for Brahma, the creator; and Pura Batu Madeg represents Vishnu, the preserver, with its black banners. You can visit many other smaller temples in Pura Besakih, though many of their inner courtyards are only reserved for pilgrims.
Bedugul is the mountains of North Bali, and it’s centred around the three crater lakes of Lake Bratan, Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan.
